Lil Nas X

Seemingly out of nowhere, Lil Nas X emerged on the scene with a single that some initially dismissed as nothing more than a novelty. As the momentum around “Old Town Road” gathered steam, the song began to infiltrate charts around the planet. As an artist, the performer stood out with his fashion and image. The track itself cleverly mixed rap with country music. It was later re-classified as country trap. Billboard dropped it from its Country Chart which sparked controversy. It was deemed to be not country enough. The publicity only strengthened its popularity. When the song claimed the #1 position of Billboard’s Pop Chart, history was made. Lil Nas X came out. This was the first performer to come out as gay while at the top. In the past, such a move would have been career suicide. Even Elton John faced a backlash at the peak of his popularity in the 1970s when he revealed his sexuality. This time, there was no adverse reaction. The song settled into the chart summit and remained there for weeks. Its residency broke the record for longest reign atop the Billboard Hot 100: 19 weeks!
