Whitney covered the 1978 Chaka Khan funky disco track for her film debut. The song was written by Nickolas Ashford and his wife Valerie Simpson. Whitney’s remake was produced by Narada Michael Walden with tweaks by Robert Clivilles and David Cole (of C+C Music Factory). Her version far surpassed the chart performance of the original, peaking at #4 in both Britain and America.

MEMORIES

with Material

Album: One Down

Before she was discovered and signed by Clive Davis, Whitney Houston scored her first recording as a featured vocalist on this track from an album released by experimental jazz/ funk band Material. It was included on the ensemble’s 1982 LP. Whitney’s solo debut was issued 3 years later. Her vocal talent is already evident on “Memories”.
