ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME 2024 NOMINATED INDUCTEES. Continues tomorrow.

Caffè Lattè examines this year’s 15 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame contenders:

THE CLASS OF

2024

We argue the case for each of 2024’s 15 nominees for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame…

- PETER FRAMPTON -

His skills as a guitarist became evident during his years in groups such as The Herd and Humble Pie. It was in the 1970s that Peter Frampton became a household name. With his good looks, he transformed his songbook into radio staples in the live context via his album ‘Frampton Comes Alive’. He was all over radio, with tracks such as “Baby I Love Your Way”, “Show Me The Way” and (later) the sweet ballad “I’m In You”.

WHO IS STILL NOT IN THE HALL OF FAME?*

*Excludes acts nominated for induction in 2024.

Despite being eligible, the following acts are 60 glaring omissions that are yet to be inducted:

NEW EDITION / BOBBY BROWN

It would be easy to dismiss New Edition as just another boy band, but a look at its line-up requires more consideration. Among its members were Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill. Both went on to success as soloists. Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe charted as Bell Biv DeVoe. The trio helped launch Boyz II Men. Also among New Edition’s ranks was Bobby Brown. He played a fundamental role in ushering in New Jack Swing with his solo career.

TOTO

Prior to forming a group, the line-up of Toto played an integral role in rock music as in-demand session musicians. Various members played on recordings by Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs and Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’. In 1978, Toto released its debut album. It contained tracks like “Hold The Line”. “Georgy Porgy” and “Rockmaker”. The band would hit greater heights with ‘IV’ in 1982, thanks to “Rosanna” and “Africa”. They hoovered up many Grammy Awards around this time. Despite the group’s pedigree and obvious musical skill, Toto have not been inducted.

HELEN REDDY

That Helen Reddy became such a successful recording act was against the odds. She was born in Melbourne, Australia. She relocated to America and persevered until she finally broke through. In 1972, Reddy released a single that became an anthem. “I Am Woman” topped the American and Canadian chart. Reddy returned to the top with “Angie Baby” (#5 in the UK) and “Delta Dawn”.

JETHRO TULL

Formed in England in 1967, Jethro Tull has earned its place as one of the leaders in prog rock, fusing it with elements of folk and art rock. Its unique sound should have been recognized by the Hall Of Fame by now.
