52ND STREET: BILLY JOEL
[1978]
Preceding album 'The Stranger' and its hit single "Just The Way You Are" were lauded by critics and embraced by the public. Billy Joel's follow-up would build on their strengths in the creation of '52nd Street'. The LP opens with the brash "Big Shot", a track that presents Joel's rock edge. It is followed by the ballad "Honesty", a heartfelt plea for a genuine relationship. "My Life" is the album's major hit, and its greatest pop moment. The LP injects Latin rhythms, jazz and jubilant horns into Joel's pop/ rock style. The moods and themes change with each new track. "Until The Night" is an epic cut in the tradition of The Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'". The only let down is the weaker title track, wisely positioned at the end; it fails to match the quality of the rest of the album. This LP entrenched Joel as one of America's best storytellers in the tradition of Bruce Springsteen and Roy Orbison.
