THE
BLACK EYED PEAS
During the early 1990s, will.I.am (William James Adams) and apl.de.ap (Allan Pineda Lindo Jr.) were members of a breakdancing outfit. The 2 quit to pursue musical goals. Eazy-E signed the new act - billed as Atban Klann- to Ruthless Records.
They were dropped following Eazy-E's death in 1995. Deciding to persevere, the pair added Taboo (Jaime Luis Gomez) and adopted the new monicker Black Eyed Peas.
1998 saw the release of debut album 'Behind the Front'. The disc dented the charts. Sales improved in 2000 when follow-up album 'Bridging The Gap' was issued.
BEP's fortunes changed for the better with the arrival of Fergie in the line-up. Her 1st album with BEP was 'Elephunk' in 2003. It topped the Australian chart and peaked at #2 in Canada and #3 in Britain. In the US, it reached #14. Lead single "Where Is The Love?" featured an uncredited Justin Timberlake and made #1 in many countries including the UK and Australia. "Shut Up" also made #1 in the latter market.
'Monkey Business' followed 2 years later and became the group's highest charting album to date, climbing to #2. The album featured the hit singles "Don't Phunk With My Heart" and "My Humps". Both topped the Australian chart.
Fergie delivered a solo album and will.I.am built up his producer resumé before BEP dropped 'The E.N.D.' in 2009. It became the group's 1st US #1 album, containing the #1s "Boom Boom Pow", "I Gotta Feeling", "Imma Be" and "Meet Me Halfway".
'The Beginning' followed in 2010 and spawned the #1 single "The Time (Dirty Bit)". A new recording of "Where Is The Love" for charity was issued in 2016 featuring a number of artists such as Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Usher and LL Cool J.
