John Mellencamp joined the ranks of Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty with his 'Scarecrow' album. The gradual progression in his songwriting reached fruition on this 1985 release. "Rain On The Scarecrow" was written by Mellencamp with George M. Green.
The song deals with the struggles of farmers in small town America. Financial woes, the weather and related issues have driven families off land they have tilled for generations. The moving song conveys the despair and grief of these rural families.
