BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…
These songs are well known
but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with
prior versions of the same song.
When You Walk In The Room
The Searchers scored the first hit version of "When You Walk In The Room". Issued as a single in 1964, it dented the American Top 40 and peaked at #3 on the British chart.
The song has been covered several times, with noteworthy remakes by Australian group The Sports in 1978; Paul Carrack in 1987 and former ABBA member Agnetha Faltskog in 2004.
The earliest version of "When You Walk In The Room" was recorded by its writer, Jackie DeShannon. Her original was released in 1963, a year before The Searchers turned the song into a hit. It was used a B-side initially but re-issued as an A-side the following year. The song was included on DeShannon's 'Breakin' It Up On The Beatles Tour' album. That LP also contained "Needles And Pins", another song The Searchers turned into a hit.
