BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…
These songs are well known
but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with
prior versions of the same song.
The First Cut Is The Deepest
Rod Stewart's version of "The First Cut Is The Deepest" was issued as part of a double A-sided single with "I Don't Want To Talk About It". In 1977, the disc reached #1 in Britain and some European countries. On the US chart, it peaked at #21. The track was featured on Stewart's 1976 album 'A Night On The Town'.
Cat Stevens wrote "The First Cut Is The Deepest". It was included on his 1967 album entitled 'New Masters'. At the time, Stevens saw himself as more of a songwriter than a recording artist. He passed the song on to P.P. Arnold. Her version was the 1st to chart and preceded the release of Stevens' interpretation. Arnold's single reached the British Top 20.
Sheryl Crow covered the song for her 2003 compilation album 'The Very Best Of Sheryl Crow'. Her remake was issued as a single. In the US, the disc peaked at #14 Pop and #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart.
