EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 2019
THE HISTORY & STATISTICS
Eurovision was conceived as a contest to unite the
countries of Europe. From 1956- 1972, all participants represented regions on the
Continent. In 1973, Israel joined the ESC family. The country has since won
Eurovision 4 times, including in 2018. For this reason, Tel Aviv is the host
city this year.
Eurovision added an African neighbor: Morocco in 1980. Lebanon
was scheduled to compete in 2005, but withdrew as it could not recognize the
state of Israel. This has held back other Middle Eastern / North African possible
participants.
In 2015, Eurovision extended further
than ever before, inviting Australia to participate. This one-off invitation
has continued since. Earlier this year, it was announced that Australia will be
able to compete for at least the next 5 years.
Plans to have an Asian – Pacific version
of Eurovision have stalled. This may
influence Australia’s future in the European contest.
