These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.

Downtown Train

Rod Stewart reached #1 in Canada and made the UK and American Top 10 with "Downtown Train" in 1989. Tom Waits penned the song. His version is the original recording and was lifted off the 'Rain Dogs' album. That LP was issued in 1985.
