THE 100 GREATEST SONGS

MMIII

The year 2003 brought us tragedies such as the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster and war was declared on Iraq based on the lie that the country had “weapons of mass destruction”.

It was a year where the final Concorde flight took place; Saddam Hussein was captured; Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected Governor of California; Wimbledon crowned Serena Williams and Roger Federer and Dan Brown’s ‘The Da Vinci Code’ hit bookshelves.

We mourned the loss of iconic legends that included Johnny Cash, Katherine Hepburn, Bob Hope and Gregory Peck while audiences flocked to see films such as: ‘Finding Nemo’, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, ‘The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King’;

Here are 100 songs representing the best music released during that year.

1

WHERE IS THE LOVE?

Black Eyed Peas

“Where Is The Love?” pushed The Black Eyed Peas from the fringes right into the mainstream. It possesses a positive message and soon became an anthem for the new millennium. As the lead single from the ‘Elephunk’ album, it introduced new recruit Fergie as a group member. Justin Timberlake also contributed vocals on the track, but his participation was uncredited. The song was a major hit around the globe, topping charts in the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

CRAZY IN LOVE

Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z

This track brought the two collaborators together romantically. In many ways, this single announced the arrival of a new Beyoncé. The track was lifted off her debut album ‘Dangerously in Love’. She had left the other girls of Destiny’s Child behind and was eager to have the spotlight focused exclusively on her. Queen Bee had arrived. “Crazy In Love” is built around a sample from The Chi-Lites’ 1970 song “Are You My Woman?”. Beyoncé and Jay-Z made fans crazy in America, Britain and Europe where the track flew to #1.

MILKSHAKE

Kelis

The Neptunes revived Kelis’ career when they offered her the song “Milkshake”. Consisting of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, the in-demand songwriting/ production team got the singer’s music back on track with the sexy track which was included on her album ‘Tasty’. The song made the Top 3 in America, the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

4

HEY YA!

Outkast

Hip hop duo Outkast struck gold with the infectious hit “Hey Ya!”. Written and produced by one half of the team, Andre 3000, the song was included on the album ‘Speakerboxxx/ The Love Below’. The song topped the American, Canadian and Australian charts. In the UK, the disc peaked at #3.

5

MY IMMORTAL

Evanescence

Evanescence revealed its softer side with the epic ballad “My Immortal”. Amy Lee stars brightly with her haunting vocal on this single lifted off the band’s ‘Fallen’ album. The song was a Top 10 hit in America, Britain, Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

6

CAN YOU FEEL IT

Jean Roch

Combine a French DJ’s talent with the track ‘Going The Distance’ (from the ‘Rocky’ motion picture soundtrack) and you have the best dance song from 2003. It was a smash in European clubs.

TOXIC

Britney Spears

By 2003, Britney had grown up. She was older, wiser and more in control. “Toxic” reflected this in many ways. The song brought Spears her first Grammy Award. Her evolution did not alienate the fanbase which took the track to #1 in Britain, Europe, Canada, Australia and into the US Top 10.
