THE GAMBLER
Kenny Rogers 1978
The majority of country songs feature storytelling. “The Gambler” is one of the best examples of this. Written in 1976 by Don Schlitz, earlier attempts to record it failed to generate chart action. It was Kenny Rogers who succeeded where others failed. In America, his remake enjoyed 3 weeks at the top of the Country Chart, peaked at #3 Easy Listening and Top 20 Pop. The single also charted in other countries, including: Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Rogers was awarded the Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. The song spawned telemovies which starred Rogers.
