STAND BY YOUR MAN
Tammy Wynette 1968
Billy Sherrill had already provided success for other country artists when a hairdresser and waitress from Alabama showed up in his office. The singer had previously been rejected by other record labels, but Sherrill signed her up. That woman was Tammy Wynette. Together, they co-wrote “Stand By Your Man”. Sherrill produced the recording. The single topped Billboard’s Country Chart for 3 weeks. It also crossed over to the Pop and Easy Listening charts. The hit quickly became her signature song and helped to establish her as ‘the First Lady of Country Music’. It earned the singer a Grammy Award. “Stand By Your Man” finally made the British chart in 1975, where it reached #1.
