CAFFE` LATTE` TOP 2000 TRACKS

#146 MIDNIGHT TRAIN TO GEORGIA Gladys Knight & The Pips
If there had been any doubt that Gladys Knight & The Pips' exodus from Motown had been a sensible move, the success of "Midnight Train To Georgia" was all the validation the family act needed. While the song will forever be associated with Knight and The Pips, their version was actually a remake.
Jim Weatherly wrote the song and recorded the original. Its initial title was "Midnight Train To Houston". Cissy Houston (Whitney's mother) recorded a remake and it was then that the train's destination was changed to Georgia.
Once Knight & The Pips had departed Motown, they began working in 1973 with producer Tony Camillo at their new label, Buddah Records. The group's new producer himself played electric piano and organ on the remake. Finally for Weatherly, his song became a smash.
Knight & The Pips' cover of "Midnight Train..." reached #1 on both the Pop and R&B charts. The single also made the Top 10 in Britain and Canada. While Weatherly's original had a country flavour, the new hit version is now an R&B classic. The family group collected the Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Group Performance -1973. The hits kept coming for them on their new label.

This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
A new song from the Top 200 is added each day, while another 2 are also included from positions 1501-2000 daily. Check back here every 12 hours for an update of the 2000.
