CAFFE` LATTE` TOP 2000 TRACKS

#137 LE FREAK Chic
In 1978, the hottest disco to be seen at was New York's Studio 54. The legendary club is immortalized in Chic's international smash "Le Freak". The song's creation was unplanned and the result of the group's pivotal members being refused entry into the venue.
Grace Jones had been impressed with the funk group's "Everybody Dance" and wanted to work with Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers. She told the 2 songwriter/ producers to meet her at Studio 54 as her guests. As Rodgers explained to me in an interview: the doorman did not believe them as everyone was trying any way to gain entry. He slammed the door in their faces and told the 2 men to "fuck off".
Realizing any further efforts would be in vain that night, they went back to Rodgers' apartment. While jamming there, they came up with a groove that evolved into a chorus that went: "aaaah, fuck off, Studio 54". They soon realized that they had a great song. Lyrics were modified. The expletive was replaced with "Freak out!". That modification referenced a dance that was around at the time and the guys drew inspiration from past songs like "The Twist" and "Peppermint Twist". Despite being snubbed by the club, Edwards and Rodgers kept the name of the venue in the song's lyrics.
"Le Freak" was added to the group's 'C'est Chic' album. Along with writing it, Edwards and Rodgers produced the iconic funky disco song. In 1978, the track was issued as a single. In the US, the song topped the Pop, Disco and R&B charts. It also reached #1 in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. In Britain, the disc peaked at #7.

This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
A new song from the Top 200 is added each day, while another 2 are also included from positions 1501-2000 daily. Check back here every 12 hours for an update of the 2000.
