#147 THE MAN WITH THE CHILD IN HIS EYES Kate Bush
Young songwriter Kate Bush caught audiences by surprise as they marvelled at her songwriting craft when she broke through with the LP 'The Kick Inside'. The haunting ballad "The Man With the Child in His Eyes" was selected as the follow-up single in 1978, after Bush had scored a global #1 hit with debut single "Wuthering Heights". Both tracks were from her 1st album release.
Bush composed "The Man...". Andrew Powell produced the cut. The single peaked at #6 in Britain. It also charted well in Ireland, Australia and the Netherlands. While the disc only reached #85 in the US, "The Man..." was Bush's 1st chart entry there. It was a long wait until 1985 before the singer would return, this time climbing to #30, with "Running Up That Hill".
Other hit songs from Bush maintained her eclectic style and included: "The Sensual World", "Don't Give Up" (a duet with Peter Gabriel), "Sat In Your Lap", "Cloudbusting", "Rubberband Girl" and "This Woman's Work".
In recent years, new releases have been few and far between. 'Aerial', issued in 2005, was Bush's 1st album of all-new songs in 12 years. It was another 6 years before '50 Words For Snow' was dropped in 2011. The new album contained only 7 tracks, 1 of which was a collaboration with Elton John; while another featured a guest vocal from her son Bertie. In 2014, Bush performed live on tour for the 1st time in 35 years.
This
is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I
cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks.
Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have
universal appeal.
They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal
choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a
better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
A
new song from the Top 200 is added each day, while another 2 are also
included from positions 1501-2000 daily. Check back here every 12 hours
for
an update of the 2000.
