BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…
These songs are well known
but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with
prior versions of the same song.
Without You
"Without You" became a worldwide smash in 1972 when Harry Nilsson released the love song. Upon discovering the original version by Badfinger, he decided to record his own interpretation for the 1971 'Nilsson Schmilsson' LP. The ballad reached #1 in America, Britain, Canada, Australia, parts of Europe and in New Zealand.
The original version was cut by British band Badfinger. It was included on the group's 'No Dice' album which was issued by The Beatles' label Apple Records. Band members Pete Ham and Tom Evans wrote the song. Sadly, both members committed suicide because of litigation and financial issues. Ham died in 1975. Evans' death followed in 1983.
"Without You" has been covered by many other artists since. The most successful subsequent remake was recorded by Mariah Carey. In 1994, her rendition topped the charts in Britain, Europe and New Zealand. In America and Australia, the single peaked at #3.
