#73
AMERICAN TRIANGLE
“…Somewhere that road forks up ahead,
to ignorance & innocence.
3 lives drift on different winds,
2 lives ruined,
1 life spent...
In 1998, Matthew Shepard was a victim of a hate crime. The gay 21 year old was assaulted, tortured and left to die by 2 perpetrators in the United States. The senseless death is recounted in the song "American Triangle" from Elton John's 2001 album 'Songs From The West Coast'.
The verses deal with the murderers' ignorance and the role of religion in perpetuating such crimes. Bernie Taupin's lyrics describes the Biblical stance: "God hates fags where we come from". He explains the killers' homophobia with the line: "hate what we don't understand".
Taupin delivered John a moving song which is a highlight track on the critically acclaimed album. Rufus Wainwright contributed background vocals on the cut.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
