These songs are well known
but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with
prior versions of the same song.
The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan
In 1979, Marianne Faithfull dropped a new single. Entitled "The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan", the song was written by Shel Silverstein and recorded with new wave attitude. The disc charted in Europe, Britain, Australia and New Zealand.
Faithfull's remake was in stark contrast to the original version. The American group Dr. Hook released the song as "The Ballad Of Lucy Jordon" as a single in 1974. At the time, the band was known by the longer moniker Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show. Its version flopped.
Silverstein wrote more successful singles for the group: "The Cover Of Rolling Stone" and "Sylvia's Mother". Both reached the US Top 10 in 1972.
