LIVING FOR THE CITY
“…This place is cruel,
nowhere could be much colder.
If we don’t change,
the world will soon be over...
Stevie Wonder scored a major hit in 1973 with his socially-charged track "Living For The City". The track was included on his 1973 album 'Innervisions'.
Wonder's lyrics describe the harsh reality of being poor and black in America. The daily struggle is dealt with in the verses, focusing first on the protagonist's family members. Those lucky enough to gain employment work hard for long hours to eke out a meagre existence.
The protagonist moves to New York City in search of a better life. Wonder condemns politicians that neglect African- Americans. As the track progresses, the protagonist is set up by racist police officers. He is dragged into a jail cell, despite his innocence.
The Grammy -winning single topped the US R&B Chart, and peaked at #8 on the Pop Top 100. Its parent album collected the Album of the Year Grammy award.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
