BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…
These songs are well known
but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with
prior versions of the same song.
I Will Follow Him
When Little Peggy March climbed to #1 on the US chart in 1963 with "I Will Follow Him", she became the youngest female to reach the chart summit. Aged 15, her hit also made #1 in Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Israel and South Africa.
"I Will Follow Him" began as an instrumental entitled "Chariot". Franck Pourcel composed it with Paul Mauriat and released the original version in 1961.
Other interpretations followed, including remakes by Petula Clark. Initially, she cut it with French lyrics. It charted in Belgium and France in 1962. An English language cover followed. Clark also recorded versions in German and Italian.
