PIANO MAN
“…The piano,
it sounds like a carnival,
&
the microphone
smells like a beer,
& they sit at the bar
& put bread in my
jar & say:
“man,
what are you doing here?”...”
Billy Joel drew inspiration from his time as a lounge singer to create the song that would become his signature tune. "Piano Man" introduces us to a menagerie of characters. There's John, the barman; Paul- the real estate novelist; Navy man Davy; the waitress and an assortment of businessmen. Together, they find themselves in the bar where the protagonist is performing. The manager is pleased with the number of patrons. On the other hand, the pianist feels he is in a dead end.
This was the perfect debut single for Joel. It was the title track from his 1st album, issued in 1973. The single charted in America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Over the years, "Piano Man" has remained a crowd favourite.
As
new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a
spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
