DON'T LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD. Continues next week.
BEFORE IT WAS A
HIT SONG…
These songs are well known but you may not know about the
earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.
Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood
The British Invasion propelled several UK groups to chart heights all over the globe. The Animals scored a major hit with "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" in 1965. In Britain, the single peaked at #3 as well as reaching #15 Stateside. At the time, the Brits were even selling back to the Americans their own songs. This was the case with "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood".
Nina Simone had recorded a version that was issued a year earlier, but failed to chart.
After The Animals turned the song into a hit single, it was covered again in 1977. As disco raged, Santa Esmeralda gave its remake a Latin/ salsa treatment atop a dance beat. The group's version, featuring vocalist Leroy Gomez, reached #15 in America and topped the Disco Chart there.
Each new song will be added to the
