BEFORE IT WAS A
HIT SONG…
These songs are well known but you may not know about the
earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.
Mary Mary
In 1966, The Monkees cut "Mary Mary". The song was written by group member Mike Nesmith. Although the track was not released in America, it was issued as a single in other countries such as Australia (where the disc made the Top 5). The group's version appeared on the 1968 album 'More Of the Monkees'. Micky Dolenz sang lead on the track.
Despite being written by one of The Monkees, the original version of "Mary Mary" had been recorded by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. That interpretation was included on the group's 'East-West' album, which was released in 1966.
A rap / rock take on the song emerged in 1988 when Run DMC adapted "Mary Mary" on its 'Tougher Than Leather' album. Issued as a single that year, it dented the US and UK charts but only proved successful in New Zealand where the disc made the Top 15. Nevertheless, it is remembered today as one of the seminal hip hop recordings.
