earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.
Cotton Eye Joe
Swedish group Rednex charted around the world with "Cotton Eye Joe" in 1994-5. The single reached the top of the British and European Top 40. As well as peaking at #25 in America, it climbed into the Canadian and Australian Top 10.
The song's origins have been cited as pre-dating the 20th century. Listed as "Cotton Eyed Joe", the earliest known recording was by Fiddlin' John Carson in 1926-7. It was later covered by Burl Ives, Nina Simone and The Chieftains.
