ELTON JOHN: 100 DEEP CUTS. This post: 1970 Part 2. More tomorrow.
100 ESSENTIAL ELTON JOHN
DEEP CUTS
TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION {1970}
After breaking through with its predecessor, this album saw Bernie Taupin’s lyrics look towards America. He and Elton had yet to step foot in the country, so these songs were inspired by the westerns of their childhood and drew inspiration from The Band’s album ‘Music From Big Pink’. Released in Britain in late October 1970, the LP finally was issued in the U.S.A. in January of the following year.
08 Come Down In Time
This track takes a detour from the Americana theme of the album. Sting covered this ballad on the ‘Two Rooms’ tribute album.
09 Country Comfort
Oozing a country sound, this track was covered by Rod Stewart on his 1970 LP ‘Gasoline Alley’. Juice Newton also recorded a remake for her 1981 album ‘Juice’.
010 Love Song
Lesley Duncan performed background vocals on the album and contributed this song to the project.
11 Amoreena
This track marks the first recording to feature longtime band members Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson.
12 Burn Down The Mission
The album again closes with the second of its longest tracks. As is the case with “My Father’s Gun”, this song runs for 6 minutes and 21 seconds. Although none of this album’s tracks became hit singles, some -particularly this one- have remained concert staples.
