100 ESSENTIAL ELTON JOHN
DEEP CUTS
MADMAN ACROSS THE WATER {1971}
In 1971, Elton released the ‘Friends’ film soundtrack, a live album ’17-11-70’ and a new studio LP. The latter included 2 new signature songs: “Tiny Dancer” and “Levon”.
13 Madman Across The Water
The LP’s title track introduces us to another stalwart in the Elton John band: Davey Johnstone. Also featured on this cut is Yes member Rick Wakeman on organ. An earlier attempt at the song was recorded for the ‘Tumbleweed Connection’ album. This version featured Mick Ronson who is best remembered for his guitar work for David Bowie at the time.
14 Indian Sunset
Both tracks highlighted were recorded on the same day: August 14th, 1971. Electric bass was performed by Herbie Flowers who also played on Lou Reed’s “Walk On The Wild Side” among other hit singles. Elton’s song was sampled for the 2Pac 2005 #1 “Ghetto Gospel”.
