From New York’s Broadway and London’s West End to stages across the globe, musicals have attracted audiences flocking to catch the classics and the innovative. Caffè Lattè has compiled a list of 100 of the best songs from stage shows. These are all songs created specifically for the stage productions and not theatrical versions of movies or jukebox musicals (eg. “The Lion King”, “Saturday Night Fever” or “Mamma Mia!” and “Jersey Boys”). They’ve touched us or made us cry and some have had us up on our feet dancing in the aisles.

ONE NIGHT IN BANGKOK

Chess

Long before “Mamma Mia”, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA had toyed with the idea of a musical. Shortly after the group was placed on ice for many decades, the two members collaborated with Tim Rice on “Chess”. The project started as an album in 1984 before being staged as a musical. This song was performed by Murray Head on the LP and in the original 1987 West End production.
