SWV

1992

U.K. - #17; U.S.A. - #6

Trivia:

"I'm So Into You" was the breakthrough single for the R&B vocal trio SWV. Released as the second single off 'It's About Time', this was the track that finally saw the women crack the US Top 40. Follow-up single "Weak", also from the album, reached #1 in America.

TRACING POPULAR MUSIC TASTES (UK PERSPECTIVE).

Today: 1955-99 More: tomorrow.

Caffè Lattè traces the shifts in popular music through the decades…

-THE LEADERBOARD-

The Rock Era is said to have begun in 1955 when “Rock Around The Clock” became the first rock ‘n’ roll disc to reach #1 on Billboard’s Singles Chart. Later that year, the song climbed to the top in the UK. Rock ‘n’ roll was making its mark on both sides of the Atlantic. We’ve already traced the shifts in musical trends from the US perspective, now our focus is on the British Top 40 Chart.

British acts would soon thrive as rock music evolved, helping to elevate trends such as Merseybeat, Britpop, skiffle, punk, house, disco and many other sub-genres.

As the millennium concluded, boy bands such as Boyzone and girl groups like The Spice Girls dominated the UK chart.

KISS ON MY LIST

Hall & Oates

1980

U.K. - #33; U.S.A. - #1

Trivia:

When recording the album that would become 'Voices', Daryl Hall and John Oates realized that working with outside producers and recording away from home was not conducive to achieving what they wanted in their musical output. Hall and Oates decided to produce the album and worked on the songs in New York, not far from where they lived. The result was a string of hit singles like "Kiss On My List". Hall co-wrote the song with the sister of his girlfriend Sara. Together, he and Janna Allen came up with the infectious track.

THE GAMBLER

Kenny Rogers 1978

The majority of country songs feature storytelling. “The Gambler” is one of the best examples of this. Written in 1976 by Don Schlitz, earlier attempts to record it failed to generate chart action. It was Kenny Rogers who succeeded where others failed. In America, his remake enjoyed 3 weeks at the top of the Country Chart, peaked at #3 Easy Listening and Top 20 Pop. The single also charted in other countries, including: Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Rogers was awarded the Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. The song spawned telemovies which starred Rogers.
