RESPECT
Aretha Franklin
Spare a thought for Otis Redding: the influential vocalist had written a powerful song and released it as a single in 1965. It climbed to #4 on the Billboard R&B chart and made it to #35 Pop. Around this time, Redding’s credentials were about to be recognized by a wider white audience.
Producer Jerry Wexler presented “Respect” to Aretha Franklin. At the time, she had made the switch from Columbia to Atlantic Records. The singer's previous label had failed to turn her immense talent into chart hits, but on Atlantic, Franklin would blossom into the Queen Of Soul.
In 1967, she cut her remake of Redding’s song. Her recording totally transformed the song and immediately became the definitive version. By singing the lyrics from a female perspective, it reflected the mood of the public and was fast adopted as an anthem for civil rights and women’s liberation.
“Respect” was recorded for her Atlantic debut album ‘I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You’. The single topped the US R&B and Pop charts. In the UK, the disc peaked at #10. Finally, Franklin had her massive chart smash and a place in history.
