THEME FROM ‘SHAFT’

Isaac Hayes

In the early 1970s, there was a radical shift. The civil rights movement was gaining more and more momentum. Attitudes within the African- American community were changing; celebrating its fashion and culture. Suddenly, there was an embracing of the “black is beautiful” image.

Isaac Hayes reflected this metamorphosis in his score for ‘Shaft’. The motion picture ushered in the blaxploitation film, where other legendary musicians including Curtis Mayfield, Bobby Womack and Marvin Gaye followed.

Starring Richard Roundtree as private detective John Shaft, the 1971 movie was ground-breaking. The character is considered the first black action hero. Hayes’ score raised the bar. His seductive deep and dark vocals augment the groove. There is an irresistible interplay between Hayes and the female backup singers and a fusion of disco, soul and funk that was years ahead of its time. The single topped the US chart. Hayes became the first African-American winner of the Best Original Song Academy Award.
