SOULSVILLE
U.S.A.
At 926 E. McLemore Avenue in Memphis, an old movie theatre was converted into an exciting new record label founded by Jim Stewart and his sister Estelle Axton. In 1960, the siblings combined the first 2 letters of their surnames to establish the Stax record label. In the Sixties, the company’s roster served up gritty and influential soul music. Among the biggest stars on the Stax/ Volt labels were: Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Sam & Dave, Booker T. & The M.G.’s, The Staple Singers and Carla Thomas.
