BILLIE JEAN
Michael Jackson
When Michael Jackson dropped his ‘Off The Wall’ album, he radically re-shaped his image. He was no longer the amazing little boy from The Jackson 5. Suddenly, he was the coolest African-American on the planet.
That first collaboration with the legendary Quincy Jones laid the groundwork for a follow-up album. ‘Thriller’ would go on to surpass the sales of its predecessor. It made Jackson the hottest act in music. What propelled the LP into the record books was “Billie Jean”. Not even “The Girl Is Mine”, his duet with Paul McCartney, widened his audience the way this blend of R&B, pop, disco, funk and dance did the trick.
In 1983, “Billie Jean” completed the evolution that had begun with “Don’t Stop ‘Till You Get Enough” and “Rock With You”. The song dealt with a fan’s claim that the protagonist had fathered her child. Jackson topped the charts in America, Britain, Europe, Canada and Australia.
When the superstar performed the song for the “Motown 25” special, he introduced his Moonwalk and added even more thrill to the track’s legacy. Little wonder Jackson was showered with Grammy Awards the following year.
