CAFFE` LATTE`
TOP 1200 CHOICE TRACKS

#308 MICHELLE The Beatles
Upon hearing The Beatles' "Michelle", one could be forgiven for thinking it was a remake, insomuch that the song sounds dissimilar to most of the group's other compositions. Created by Paul McCartney and John Lennon, the love song swiftly became a standard. The former's lead vocals - sung in both English and French- are tender throughout. The musicianship and harmonies are wisely matched to the song's mood. Jan Vaughan, a friend of McCartney's, provided the French lyrics.
"Michelle" was produced by George Martin and included on the Fab Four's 'Rubber Soul' album in 1965. The composition earned The Beatles the 1966 Song of the Year Grammy Award. It is 1 of the group's most covered tracks, having been recorded by the likes of The Supremes, David & Jonathan (who charted with their remake in the US and reached #1 in Canada in 1966) and The Overlanders (their cover made #1 in Britain for 3 weeks in the same year).
Despite the appeal of the song, The Beatles decided against releasing their original version as a single in the UK, America or Australia. It did reach #1 in some European countries. It remains an example of the breadth of the talent within that band.

This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
2 new songs are added each day (every 12 hours)  with an expanded edition coming soon!
