#290 YOU MAKE MY DREAMS Hall & Oates
In 1980, Hall & Oates released the 'Voices' album. This LP marked a turning point for the duo. They were pursuing a more commercial pop direction musically from their R&B-drenched earlier work. The album's new material saw the 2 vocalists enter the new decade with an increased profile. This set the duo up as 1 of the leading singles acts of the 1980s.
Both Daryl Hall and John Oates co-wrote "You Make..." with Sara Allen. The latter had been a friend and songwriting collaborator of Hall's for years. She inspired their 70s hit "Sara Smile". Their relationship blossomed romantically.
Hall & Oates produced the track. The song had been the flip side of "Kiss on my List" in some territories, including Australia. "You Make..." was then selected as the follow-up single. Its hooks and doo wop style proved irresistible. The single peaked at #5 in the US. The duo's next releases produced a string of American chart topping singles.
This
is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I
cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks.
Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have
universal appeal.
They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal
choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a
better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
2
new instalments are added each day (every 12 hours) with 1 of the
remaining 300 songs as well as moving down from #1201 to 1500, with 5 of
those songs added daily.
