#293 DOCTOR'S ORDERS Carol Douglas
Carol Douglas is 1 of disco's umpteen one-hit wonders, having enjoyed a dance hit with "Doctor's Orders" in late 1974. The disc was 1 of the earliest disco songs to chart, way before the genre reached its halcyon years.
The singer was born Carol Strickland in New York in 1948; a cousin of the legendary gospel / soul vocalist Sam Cooke. Her mother, Minnie Newsome, is said to have inspired Cab Calloway's 1930s classic "Minnie the Moocher".
In the early 1970s Douglas was a member of The Chantels, before launching her solo career. "Doctor's Orders" had been a UK
hit for Sunny earlier that year. Douglas' version was included on her
debut 'The Carol Douglas Album'. The remake reached #2 on the US Disco
Chart and 11 Pop. She also reached the Top 10 in New Zealand, Canada and
parts of Europe.
The song was written by Roger Cook, Roger Greenaway and Geoff Stephens and produced by Ed O'Laughin. The former 2 had penned hits for other acts, including a Coke jingle that was adapted by The New Seekers as "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing". Stephens has written hits for The Drifters, Herman's Hermits, Cliff Richard, Tom Jones and David Soul.
Sadly, Douglas failed to find a suitable follow-up to her first hit. "A Hurricane Is Coming Tonite" struggled to #81 in 1975 on the Billboard Hot 100. She continues to record and perform- albeit not as regularly- to this day.
This
is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I
cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks.
Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have
universal appeal.
They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal
choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a
better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
2
new instalments are added each day (every 12 hours) with 1 of the
remaining 300 songs as well as moving down from #1201 to 1500, with 5 of
those songs added daily.
