& pop acts since the start of the Rock Era in 1955.
To be eligible, the songs need to have been first heard in
association with a film from the last 60 years (although some exceptions do
exist where the song gained a higher profile after its use in a motion
picture)- so no songs from “West Side Story”, “Phantom of the Opera”, “Les
Miserables” or “The Sound Of Music” and other films that first started out as
stage musicals.

WHO'S JOHNNY
El DeBarge
(‘Short Circuit’- 1986)
Ally Sheedy starred in the science fiction comedy film from which "Who's Johnny" came from. The song launched singer El DeBarge's solo career following his departure from the family act DeBarge. It gave his label Motown a #3 Pop hit.

LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE TO ME
Boz Scaggs
(‘Urban Cowboy’- 1980)
Country music was popular in the late 1970s and 'Urban Cowboy' capitalized on that trend. This ballad written by Boz Scaggs with David Foster is more Adult Contemporary than country, but did give the former another Top 20 hit.

Casting Cher with Christina Aguilera in the film musical 'Burlesque' was an inspired choice that worked effectively. Cher makes a stand on "You Haven't Seen The Last Of Me", a power ballad from the pen of Dianne Warren.

'Made In America' was a comedy film starring Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Danson. Gloria Estefan's upbeat dance track "Go Away" is an irresistible song reminiscent of her days with The Miami Sound Machine.

(‘ABBA: The Movie’- 1977)
"Eagle" bursts with colour when it is heard during the Swedish group's film vehicle 'ABBA: The Movie'. Lasse Hallstrom directed the group on its tour of Australia, creating a film while ABBA went from concert to concert across the country.

David Lynch directed the mystery film. Angelo Badalamenti's score was given a vocal version performed with precision by Julee Cruise. The cult film will continue to draw increasing attention to the haunting song.

The British film starring Lynn Redgrave and James Mason had a catchy title song performed by Australian group The Seekers. The film gained 4 Academy Award nominations, 1 of them being for the song.

Sometimes songs eclipse the profiles of the movies they were created for. The romantic comedy starring Michael Douglas may be obscure but it provided Diana Ross with a Top 10 hit. The dramatic song was written by Michael Masser and Carole Bayer Sager.

(‘What's New Pussycat?’- 1965)
Tom Jones scored a chart hit with the Oscar-nominated title song from a Peter Sellers comedy film. The song was created by the crack songwriting duo Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Today, the film may be forgotten, but the song is remembered.
