TOTO IV: TOTO
Toto Toto IV.jpg
 [1982]
Unjustly criticised for being too slick, Toto did deliver definitive studio perfection 80s style. On this fourth album, the accomplished musicians managed to add enough pop hooks to make the songs more relatable (unlike the preceding 2 LPs). While this album did have many detractors, few could resist the charm of "Africa". The pounding beat of "Rosanna" is one of the defining tracks of the decade. With "I Won't Hold You Back", Toto helped create a blueprint for the power ballad. There are weaker tracks, and this album does pale in comparison to the skill demonstrated on Toto's debut LP, but there is no denying the pedigree of the band's members. These performers were in high demand as session musicians for good reason: they had played on classic albums such as Boz Scaggs' 'Silk Degrees' and would play on Michael Jackson's 'Thriller'. Highlight tracks: Africa; Rosanna & I Won't Hold You Back.
