The definitive list of 200 songs from the movies, recorded by by rock & pop acts since the start of the Rock Era in 1955.

To be eligible, the songs need to have been first heard in association with a film from the last 60 years (although some exceptions do exist where the song gained a higher profile after its use in a motion picture)- so no songs from “West Side Story”, “Phantom of the Opera”, “Les Miserables” or “The Sound Of Music” and other films that first started out as stage musicals.

 The crime thriller 'New Jack City' starred Wesley Snipes and Ice T. As would be expected from the film's title, the soundtrack features new jack swing songs which reflected the popularity of that sub-genre at the time. "I Wanna Sex You Up" made #1 in Britain and #2 in the U.S.

 Whitney Houston starred in the romantic drama 'Waiting To Exhale', 1 of the better films in that genre. Its Babyface-produced soundtrack consisted entirely of tracks by female African-American artists. Houston's hit reached #1 Pop and R&B in the U.S.

 The historical film 'Selma' deals with the US civil rights movement in the 1960s. It collected the Oscar for Best Original Song this year. Its lyrics bridge the past with the ongoing struggles that sadly still exist for present-day African-Americans in their own country.

 'City Of Angels' was a romantic drama fantasy film which featured the stripped back track "Uninvited". At the time, Alanis Morissette was basking in the glory of her influential 'Jagged Little Pill' album. The song would later became a dance anthem for remixers Freemasons.
