THE YEAR IN
REVIEW
2015
THE
20 BEST ALBUMS
20 KYLIE
CHRISTMAS
KYLIE
MINOGUE
Australia’s pop princess dropped a fun-filled X’mas album
that never forgets that this time is meant to be merry. There are the Yuletide
classics as well as plenty of humour (especially Kylie’s duet with Iggy Pop-
“Christmas Wrapping”). Also included is a posthumous duet with Frank Sinatra.
19 SOME TYPE OF LOVE
CHARLIE PUTH
Charlie Puth emerged this year as a promising new talent. 'Some Type Of Love' is an E.P. and an album is imminent.
18 NO PLACE IN HEAVEN
MIKA
Mika's albums are always interesting
and bursting with energy. On his 2015 album, the singer continues
channeling Freddie Mercury, Jake Shears and other pop idols.
17 HIDDEN
GEMS
ACE OF BASE
Ace Of Base crafted some of Sweden's pop. 'Hidden Gems' had rare B-sides and previously unreleased songs that we finally heard.
16 REBEL
HEART
MADONNA
Madonna's recent albums have lacked relevance, but 'Rebel Heart' saw her claw back.
15 BLOOD
LIANNE LA HAVAS
Lianne La Havas dropped her 2nd studio album 'Blood' in mid- 2015. It contains a strong set of tracks.
14 HOMAGE
JIMMY SOMERVILLE
The voice behind Bronski Beat and The
Communards has always bloomed in a disco context. 'Homage' sees Jimmy
Somerville refresh the disco mood into a contemporary sound.
13 X
ED SHEERAN
Ed Sheeran's 'X' was issued in 2014
but singles were still being lifted off it well into 2015. This, his 2nd
album, is 1 of the best releases of the decade thus far.
12 IN THE LONELY HOUR
SAM SMITH
The deeper you explore Sam Smith's
debut album, the greater the pleasure. It is easy to be distracted by
the hype, but 'In The Lonely Hour' is an accomplished debut album. The
recent deluxe editions make this package even more appealing.
11 FIFTY SHADES OF GREY
MOVIE SOUNDTRACK
Disregard the novel and crap film
adaptation and just enjoy the fine songs compiled for the movie
soundtrack. There's a clever balance of oldies (notably Frank Sinatra's
"Witchcraft") and new songs from contemporary artists such as The
Weeknd, Vaults and Ellie Goulding.
10 ELEVEN
TINA ARENA
Australian chanteuse Tina Arena dropped her 11th studio album in 2015. All originals & splendidly demonstrating that voice.
9 UNBREAKABLE
JANET JACKSON
Janet Jackson came back with a return
to form: her best album in many years. 'Unbreakable' reunites her with
songwriting / production team Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, the duo
behind her best 80s material.
8 GREATEST HITS
FLEETWOOD MAC
With highlights from the albums
'Rumours', 'Fleetwood Mac' and 'Tusk',
this album is a must-have in any collection. Later singles round off a
strong collection. The fact that the group toured Australia late in 2015
with the return of Christine McVie didn't hurt sales either.
7 25
ADELE
Adele proved her growing fan base was
eagerly craving her latest album. The 25 year old singer executes the
tracks on the new album skilfully.
6 MADE IN THE A.M.
ONE DIRECTION
One Direction continues to grow as a
band and in 2015 unleashed its best album yet. This was essential in a
year that saw the boy band downsize following the departure of Zayn
Malik. 1D has announced that the members are going on hiatus beginning
2016. 'Made In The A.M.' is a fitting point in its discography to pause.
5 SELECTED WORKS 1972-199
THE EAGLES
The Eagles toured Austalia in 2015 and reminded us of its rich history and timeless songbook, spread out across 4 CDs.
4 EUROVISION 2015 - VIENNA
VARIOUS ARTISTS
60 years on, the Eurovision Song
Contest continues to assemble countries that now extend beyond Europe's
borders. For the first time, Australia was invited to participate. It
will compete again in 2016. All of the songs from the finals are
compiled on the CD. Sweden's entry "Heroes" won and so the ESC will be
held in Stockholm in May.
3 J HUD
JENNIFER HUDSON
Jennifer Hudson's 3rd studio album was
issued in late 2014 and tracks from it lingered well into 2015. It's
her best release and serves as a powerful showcase of J Hud's
considerable talent.
2 UPTOWN SPECIAL
MARK RONSON
After the massive success of "Uptown Funk" in 2014, anticipation was high for Mark Ronson's new album. The album boasts an array of styles and funky tracks.
1 DEJA VU
GIORGIO MORODER
After guesting on Daft Punk's album, the renaissance of Giorgio Moroder continued with the release of his best solo project. The DJ/ producer assembled various contemporary singers including Sia, Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, Charli XCX and Foxes for 'Deja Vu'.
