THE
HISTORY OF THE
EUROVISION
SONG
CONTEST
Caffé Latté looks back on
the key moments of Europe’s annual competition.
1956
The inaugural contest
took place in Lugano, Switzerland. Only 7 countries participated, each with 2 songs in contention. A winner was selected by juries from the participating nations: Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg and Italy. The voting was secret and nothing remains of the final scores, except that "Refrain" was declared the winning song. Lys Assia performed the 2 Swiss entries: the first in German and the (triumphant) 2nd in French. She returned to compete in the 1957 and '58 contests.
