CHRISTINA
AGUILERA
Arriving in the wake of Britney Spears' breakthrough in the teen pop arena, Christina Aguilera soon proved herself to be her rival's superior in terms of ability.
The New Yorker was born in 1980 and, after competing in a series of talent contests, wound up part of the Disney Channel's "Mickey Mouse Club" in 1992. After the show's demise, Aguilera tried to build up a resumé as a solo performer.
She had a song included on the 'Mulan' movie soundtrack. This led to Aguilera being signed up by the RCA label. Her
self-titled debut album was issued in 1999. It reached #1 in the USA
and Canada. Lead single "Genie In A Bottle" topped the US, UK and
Canadian charts. "What A Girl Wants" and "Come On Over (All I Want Is
You)" became her 2nd and 3rd #1 singles in America.
Around this time, Aguilera collected the Best New Artist Grammy Award. She released Spanish-language and Christmas albums. A remake of Labelle's "Lady Marmalade" for the film 'Moulin Rouge!' (recorded with Lil' Kim, Mya and Pink) reached #1 in America, Britain, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
2002 saw the issue of 'Stripped', for which Aguilera revamped her image. Adopting a brazen attitude, the singer shed her teen image. Lead single "Dirrty" topped the UK chart. Follow-up "Beautiful" did the same and peaked at #2 Stateside.
Next, Aguilera teamed with Missy Elliott for a 2004 cover of Rose Royce's "Car Wash" as part of the 'Shark Tale' film soundtrack. A new album was unleashed in 2006. 'Back To Basics' further demonstrated Xtina's versatility. Its highlight tracks include the hit singles "Ain't No Other Man", "Hurt" and "Candyman". The album returned Aguilera to the top of the album charts across the planet.
A compilation album entitled 'Keeps Gettin' Better: A Decade Of Hits' hit record shelves in 2008. Xtina's next studio project, 'Bionic' came out in 2010. The album reached #1 in Britain. 'Lotus' followed in 2012.
Recently, Aguilera has been seen on TV; as a judge on "The Voice" and on the soap "Nashville". In 2016, Xtina released "Change", a charity disc in the wake of the Orlando shooting tragedy.
