HALLELUJAH. Check back here for the next update in 2019.
BEFORE IT WAS A
HIT SONG…
These songs are well known but you may not know about the
earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.
Hallelujah
There have been countless remakes of "Hallelujah", most particularly after Jeff Buckley covered it for his 'Grace' album. Issued in 1994, the young singer / songwriter's only studio album recorded during his short life featured his rendition as an album track. Over subsequent years, the spotlight shifted towards the song. It was finally released as a single in 2007. The disc eventually reached #2 in Britain and Canada.
Other versions have been recorded by a vast array of acts that includes K.D. Lang, Rufus Wainwright (used on the 'Shrek' movie soundtrack), Pentatonix, Alexandra Burke, John Cale and Bon Jovi. Burke's remake topped the UK chart in 2008.
The original version was recorded by its songwriter: Canadian recording artist Leonard Cohen. His interpretation was featured on his 1984 album 'Various Positions'. Today, it would arguably be Canada's most famous rock song.
