BARBRA STREISAND
-HER IOO MOST ESSENTIAL SONGS-
Barbra Streisand is one of the most celebrated performers, earning Emmy, Grammy, Academy and Tony Awards in a career spanning six decades. This is a countdown of her 100 finest recordings from 1963 to the present day.
50
WITH ONE LOOK
The second of 2 songs from the musical “Sunset Boulevard” included on ‘Back To Broadway’ was co-produced by Streisand with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Nigel Wright. “With One Look” is sung by lead character Norma Desmond in the stage production.
49
GOTTA MOVE
“Gotta Move” was written and produced by Peter Matz. The track is on Streisand’s 1966 album release ‘Color Me Barbra’. In the UK, it was issued as ‘Colour Me Barbra’. The LP peaked at #3 on Billboard’s US Album Chart.
48
NIAGARA
Recorded on August 8, 1979, in Hollywood, “Niagara” is perhaps the weakest connection to the album theme of water used for the ‘Wet’ concept. It seems the only link is that it is the location of Niagara Falls. The ballad was written by Marvin Hamlisch, Carol Bayer Sager and Bruce Roberts.
47
WHAT KIND OF FOOL
The ‘Guilty’ album featured 2 duets Streisand recorded with Barry Gibb. Both were issued as singles and reached the Top 10 in America. “What Kind Of Fool” topped Billboard’s Adult Contemporary Chart.
46
COMIN’ IN AND OUT OF YOUR LIFE
Columbia wanted a Streisand album out for the holidays in 1981. The singer was pre-occupied with preproduction for ‘Yentl’. Her label decided to release a compilation which would include 2 brand new Streisand tracks: a cover of “Memory” and “Comin’ In And Out Of Your Life”. The latter peaked at #11 as a single in the U.S.A. In Britain, the LP was entitled ‘Love Songs’ and reached #1.
45
LEFT IN THE DARK
Jim Steinman wrote, arranged and produced “Left In The Dark”. He had already enjoyed success with the 'Bat Out Of Hell' LP (Meat Loaf), “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” (Bonnie Tyler) and “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All” (Air Supply). Streisand recorded her track on June 18, 1984 for the ‘Emotion’ album, issued later in that year.
44
RUN WILD
Barry Gibb co-wrote
“Run Wild” with his brother Robin. The track, featured on ‘Guilty’, was the
B-side to Streisand’s worldwide hit “Woman In Love”. All 3 members of The Bee Gees were involved in the album project.
43
NEW YORK STATE OF MIND
The original version of “New York State Of Mind” was recorded by its creator, Billy Joel. It was included on his 1976 album ‘Turnstiles’. Joel was poised for major success with his next albums, so having one of his compositions covered by an artist of Streisand’s stature was a coup. Her remake appeared on ‘Superman’, unleashed in June 1977, just 3 months before Joel released his classic album ‘The Stranger’. The 2 artists teamed up to re-record the song as a duet in 2014 for Streisand’s release ‘Partners’.
42
THE SUMMER KNOWS
Michel Legrand collaborated with Alan & Marilyn Bergman for the theme to the 1971 film ‘Summer Of ‘42’. The trio have contributed several compositions to the Streisand catalogue. She recorded her version of “The Summer Knows” (aka Theme from ‘Summer Of ‘42’) for her 1971 album ‘Barbra Joan Streisand’.
41
HE TOUCHED ME
Streisand recorded “He Touched Me” in New York in August 1965. The song was from the musical “Drat! The Cat!”. At the time, her husband Elliot Gould was starring in the Broadway production. He sang “She Touched Me” in the show. Streisand’s version was included on her ‘My Name Is Barbra, Two’ album.
