MISSISSIPPI GODDAM
Nina Simone
When Nina Simone heard about the fatal shooting of civil rights activist Medgar Evers in Mississippi and the bombing of a church in Birmingham, Alabama that claimed the lives of 4 girls, her immediate reaction was to seek revenge. Her husband talked her out of it, suggesting she write a song about how she felt. “Mississippi Goddam” was Simone’s first civil rights composition and issued in 1964.
