World music blossomed during the 1980s, spearheaded by Simon’s ‘Graceland’ album. He followed that LP with ‘The Rhythm Of The Saints’ in 1990. Once again, Simon drew inspiration from various cultures with tracks such as “Further To Fly” on the album.

Art Garfunkel
Cliff Richard scored a #15 hit with “Miss You Nights” in 1975. Four years later, Garfunkel covered the song for his ‘Fate For Breakfast’ LP.

In 1964, the first Simon & Garfunkel album, 'Wednesday Morning 3AM'. was issued. Its opening track was the gospel song “You Can Tell The World”.

GOD BLESS THE ABSENTEE

The film ‘One Trick Pony’ cost $7 million to make and earned back less than $1 million. Simon wrote and starred in the 1980 motion picture. “God Bless The Absentee” was included on the soundtrack.

LEAVES THAT ARE GREEN

‘The Sounds Of Silence’ was released once the electrified version of the song was unleashed as a single. It attracted a wider audience than the duo’s debut LP. Among its tracks was “Leaves That Are Green”, penned by Simon.

TRAVELING BOY

Garfunkel’s solo debut album was ‘Angel Clare’ in 1973. By then, his former musical partner had already established himself as a soloist. Garfunkel co-produced his first foray in his own right with Roy Halee, who had worked in that capacity with the duo on the ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ LP. “Traveling Boy” (sic) was written by Paul Williams and Roger Nichols.

Another early Simon composition included on ‘Sounds Of Silence’, “Richard Cory” reveals later that the man referred to in the title takes his own life.

OH HOW HAPPY
Art Garfunkel
“Oh How Happy” from ‘Fate For Breakfast’ is a cover of Blinky & Edwin Starr’s 1969 Motown single. Garfunkel’s album has the writer of the track as Charles Hatcher. Starr was born Charles Edward Hatcher in 1942.
