ELTON JOHN: 100 DEEP CUTS. This post: 1993. More tomorrow.

Elton John boasts a catalogue of mega-selling and critically lauded albums. His songs are ubiquitous on the radio. We are all familiar with the signature hit songs such as “Candle In The Wind”, “Tiny Dancer”, “Rocket Man”, “I’m Still Standing”, “Daniel”, “Crocodile Rock”, “Your Song” and “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”. Elton’s songbook is so rich, further exploration reveals a treasure trove of gems just as deserving of attention. Caffè Lattè presents 100 deep cuts -compiled in chronological order- spanning the decades, from 1969 to the present. These tracks may be underrated or unfamiliar, but are further evidence of the talent possessed by Elton John.

Elton’s next project was the ‘Duets’ album, featuring collaborations with acts as diverse as Little Richard, Gladys Knight, Don Henley, Tammy Wynette and Leonard Cohen. Its release was preceded by the global chart-topper “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”, re-recorded as a duet with George Michael and included on the album. A solo track entitled “Duets For One” closes the LP.

72 Teardrops

Elton teamed up with fellow gay icon K.D. Lang for a remake of Womack & Womack’s “Teardrops”. Recorded in Hollywood, Greg Penny produced the cut. Strings were arranged and conducted by Arif Mardin.

73 I'm Your Puppet

The 1966 soul hit by James & Bobby Purify was covered by Elton and British singer Paul Young. The 2 singers recorded the track in Hollywood with Steve Lindsey at the helm. Greg Phillinganes contributed piano on the duet.

74 Love Letters

Dating back to 1945, “Love Letters” was a hit for Ketty Lester in 1962. Bonnie Raitt shares vocal duties with Elton on their remake. He plays piano while she contributes slide guitar. The track also features Ricky Fataar on drums and Billy Preston on organ. Don Was produced the recording.

Aretha Franklin – Spanish Harlem / Lean On Me (1971, Vinyl) - DiscogsA remake of a song first recorded by Ben E. King. Written by Jerry Leiber and Phil Spector, Aretha’s version was produced by Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd and Arif Mardin. Her interpretation improved on King’s chart performance: peaking at #2 Pop and enjoying 3 weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Soul Chart.

Duet with Eurythmics

Eurythmics SADIFT.jpgThis anthemic collaboration was written by the British duo’s Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart. The latter produced the track. It appeared on both acts’ 1985 albums: ‘Be Yourself Tonight’ (Eurythmics) and ‘Who’s Zoomin’ Who?’. The single made the Top 10 in Britain, Europe and New Zealand.

It was originally issued as a single in 1968. That version made the Pop Top 10 and reached #1 on the Soul Chart. Aretha re-recorded the song for the film ‘The Blues Brothers’ which included her in the cast alongside other performers that included Ray Charles, James Brown and Cab Calloway. The film version is also included on the ‘Aretha’ 2021 box set.
