From New York’s Broadway and London’s West End to stages across the globe, Caffè Lattè has compiled a list of 100 of the best songs from stage shows. These are all songs created specifically for the stage productions and not theatrical versions of movies or jukebox musicals (eg. “The Lion King”, “Saturday Night Fever” or “Mamma Mia!” and “Jersey Boys”). They’ve touched us or made us cry and some have had us up on our feet dancing in the aisles.

DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING?

Les Miserables

In the original French version of “Les Miserables”, the stirring “Do You Hear The People Sing?” was entitled “A La Volonté Du Peuple”. The lyrics were changed for the English production but both possess a quality that sets this apart from other moments in musical productions.

“Do You Hear The People Sing?” is a call to arms. It is difficult not to be moved by the song when it is performed during the show. Its verses are filled with optimism, empowerment and hope. Once you have heard it, this song remains imbedded in your memory. This is the one that you will relive as you exit the theatre. “Les Miserables” includes many powerful songs, but "Do You Hear The People Sing?" best captures the spirit of its story.
