FAITH
George Michæl
1987- Faith
Wham! had been very successful. When George decided to
launch a solo career, he was taking a risk. After scoring a solo hit with “A
Different Corner”, he released a duet with Aretha Franklin which reached #1.
Next, he finally shook off the bubblegum image associated with Wham! when
he dropped his single “I Want Your Sex”. This allowed Michael to be seen as
an adult. The controversy sparked by that single only helped to reinforce his
new approach and helped it grow into a worldwide hit song.
A lot was riding on George’s debut solo album. The
title track was his next single. Starting with a church organ at the intro,
the song is a throwback to rock ‘n’ roll.
“Faith” topped the US, Europe, Canada, Australia and
New Zealand charts. In Britain, the disc peaked at #2. Its parent album reached #1
in America, the UK, Europe and Canada. No less than 7 singles were lifted off the
LP, with 4 topping the US chart. There was now no doubt that this new phase
in George’s musical career would prove lucrative.
