DO YOU KNOW THE WAY TO SAN JOSE
Dionne Warwick (1968)
Burt Bacharach and Hal David created many fine recordings for a variety of artists, but when they recruited Dionne Warwick, they discovered the perfect vehicle for their musical output. At first, she was asked to work on some demos. The writers brought Warwick’s talent to the attention of Florence Greenberg of Scepter Records. Her demo was so impressive that she was signed up to the label. Bacharach and David composed and produced her first single “Don’t Make Me Over”. The disc was issued in 1962. For the rest of the decade, they delivered other great pop songs that Warwick applied her magic to, including “Do You Know The Way To San Jose”. The single became her seventh US Top 10 hit and her highest charting disc to date in Britain. It remains one of Warwick’s signature songs.
